Sri Sharadamba Temple (Sringeri)

About the Temple

The principal temple of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, one of the four cardinal mathas established by Adi Shankaracharya. The idol of Goddess Sharadamba is unique, holding a rosary and a book, with no Veena.

History: The original temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya himself in the 8th century. The current golden idol of Sharadamba was installed in the 14th century.

Significance: This is the most important seat of Goddess Saraswati worship in South India. Students from across India perform Aksharabhyasam here. The chanting of Vedic hymns here is world-famous.
