Sri Chamundeshwari Temple (Mysore)
About the Temple
Perched atop the 3,489-foot Chamundi Hill in Mysore, this is one of the most powerful Shakti Peethas in South India. The temple offers a panoramic view of Mysore city and its famous palace.
History: The temple dates back to the 12th century and was expanded by the Vijayanagara rulers and later by the Wodeyars of Mysore. According to legend, the goddess killed the demon Mahishasura here.
Significance: The temple is the namesake of Mysore (originally called Mahishuru - the city of Mahisha). The 1,000-step stairway leading to the temple has a massive Nandi statue. The goddess is the patron deity of the Mysore royal family.
