About the Temple

A historic temple located in Penugonda, West Godavari district, dedicated to Goddess Kanyaka Parameswari. The temple is the center of the Vysya (Arya Vysya) community's spiritual life.

History: The temple dates back to the 11th century. According to legend, the goddess appeared as a young girl (Kanyaka) to save the Vysya community from the oppressive king Vishnuvardhana.

Significance: This is the most important temple for the Vysya community worldwide. The goddess is considered the community's protecting deity.
