Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple
About the Temple
A magnificent hilltop temple at Simhachalam, about 16 km from Visakhapatnam. Lord Narasimha is depicted with a lion's face and human body, holding a plough and a pestle. The unique feature is that the idol is always covered with sandalwood paste (Chandanam), revealing the true form only once a year.
History: The temple was built in the 11th century by the Eastern Ganga dynasty. It is believed that Lord Narasimha appeared here to bless the demon king Hiranyakasipu's son Prahlada. The temple is one of the 18 Narasimha Kshetras.
Significance: The idol is covered with sandalwood paste throughout the year. On the night of Vaisakha Purnima, the paste is removed and the deity's original form is visible to devotees. This is known as 'Chandanotsavam'.
