About the Temple

A masterpiece of Hoysala architecture, this temple in Belur is known for its incredible stone carvings. The 44-feet tall pillars, intricately carved ceilings, and the stunning bracket figures (Madanikas) are world-famous.

History: Built in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala Empire to commemorate his victory over the Cholas. The temple took 103 years to complete.

Significance: This is one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple has no parallel for its intricate stonework, with each pillar telling a story.
