Isha Upanishad - Chapter 1

All this — whatever moves in this moving world — is pervaded by the Lord. Protect yourself through that renunciation. Do not covet anyone's wealth.

Performing actions here, one should desire to live a hundred years. Thus for you — there is no other way — karma does not cling to a person.

Those worlds covered by blinding darkness — to them go, after death, those people who slay the Self.

It is unmoving, one, swifter than the mind. The gods did not reach it — it moved ahead. Standing, it outstrips those who run. In it, the wind holds the waters.

It moves; it does not move. It is far; it is near. It is within all this; it is outside all this.

One who sees all beings in the Self alone, and the Self in all beings — from that one does not shrink away.

When, for the one who knows, all beings have become the Self — then what delusion, what grief can there be for one who sees unity?

He pervades all — pure, bodiless, without wounds, without sinews, pure, untouched by evil. The seer, the thinker, the all-pervading, the self-existent — he has duly assigned their duties to the eternal years.

Into blinding darkness enter those who worship ignorance. Into even greater darkness enter those who are devoted to knowledge alone.

Different, they say, is the result obtained by knowledge; different, they say, is the result obtained by ignorance. Thus have we heard from the wise who explained this to us.

One who knows both knowledge and ignorance together — crossing death through ignorance (karma), attains immortality through knowledge.

Into blinding darkness enter those who worship the unmanifest. Into even greater darkness enter those devoted to the manifest alone.

Different, they say, is the result from the manifest; different, they say, is the result from the unmanifest. Thus have we heard from the wise.

One who knows both the manifest and dissolution together — crossing death through dissolution, attains immortality through the manifest.

The face of Truth is covered by a golden vessel. O Pushan, remove it, so that I who am devoted to truth may behold it.

O Pushan, sole traveller, controller, Sun, son of Prajapati — spread your rays, gather your light. I see your most auspicious form. That Purusha who is there — I am He.

The breath merges into the immortal air; this body ends in ashes. Om. O will, remember! Remember what was done! O will, remember! Remember what was done!

O Agni, lead us by the good path to prosperity. O God, you know all our deeds. Remove from us the crooked sin. We offer you the most abundant salutation.
