Sri Virupaksha Temple (Hampi)

About the Temple

Located in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi, this is one of the oldest functioning temples in India. The temple is the center of the annual Hampi Utsav and is a masterpiece of Vijayanagara architecture.

History: The temple dates back to the 7th century but reached its peak during the Vijayanagara empire (14th-16th centuries). The temple complex covers a massive area with exquisite pillared halls, towering gopurams, and intricate carvings.

Significance: The temple has been in continuous worship for over 1,300 years, making it one of the oldest functioning temples in the world. The temple chariot and the 50-meter tall gopuram are architectural marvels.
