कति ह वा अस्मिन् पुरुषे प्राणाः | कतर एते पुरुषं विधारयन्ति | कश्चैतेषां वरिष्ठ इति ||२.१||

पञ्चैव प्राणाः | प्राणोऽपानो व्यान उदानः समानश्चेति ||२.३||

एष ह वाव वरिष्ठः यः प्राणः | एष एव सर्वाणि भूतानि धारयति ||२.१३||
This one is indeed the greatest — the chief prana. This one alone supports all beings.

अरा इव रथनाभौ प्राणे सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् | ऋचो यजूंषि सामानि यज्ञः क्षत्रं ब्रह्म च ||२.६||
As spokes are established in a wheel hub, so everything is established in prana — the Rig, Yajur, Sama Vedas, sacrifice, power, and Brahman.

अथ भार्गवो वैदर्भिः पप्रच्छ | भगवन् कति देवाः प्रजां विधारयन्ते | कतर एतत्प्रकाशयन्ते | कश्चैतेषां वरिष्ठ इति ||२.१||
Then Bhargava Vaidarbhi asked: 'O Blessed One, how many gods support the creatures? Which of these illuminate it? And who among them is the greatest?'

ते ह देवाः प्राणे विवदमाना ब्रह्म जग्मुः | ते होचुः को नः श्रेष्ठ इति | तान् होवाच यस्मिन् वः प्रयत्युत्क्रान्ते शरीरं पापिष्ठतरमिव दृश्यते स वः श्रेष्ठ इति ||२.२||
The gods, disputing about prana, went to Brahman and asked: 'Who among us is the greatest?' He said: 'The one whose departure makes the body appear most wretched — that one is the greatest among you.'

सा ह वाग्उत्क्रामत् | सा संवत्सरं प्रोष्य आगत्योवाच | कथमशकत मद्विना जीवितुमिति | प्राणा ऊचुः | यथा मूका अप्राणन्तः प्राणेन जीवन्तः ||२.४||
Speech departed. Having stayed away a year, it returned and asked: 'How could you live without me?' The pranas said: 'Like the mute — not speaking, but living by prana.'

एष ह्येवाग्निस्तपति | एष सूर्यः | एष पर्जन्यः | एष वायुः | एष पृथिवी | एष रयिः | एष देवः | एष असत् | एष सत् ||२.५||
This one burns as fire; this one is the sun; this one is rain; this one is wind; this one is earth; this one is matter; this one is God; this one is being and non-being.

प्राणो ह पिता प्राणो माता प्राणो भ्राता प्राणः स्वसा प्राण आचार्यः प्राणो ब्राह्मणः ||२.१३||
Prana is the father, prana is the mother, prana is the brother, prana is the sister, prana is the teacher, prana is Brahman.

एष लोकपालः | एष लोकाधिपतिः | एष सर्वेषां भूतानां पालयिता | एष सेतुर्विधरण एषां लोकानामसम्भेदाय ||२.१३||
This is the protector of the worlds, the lord of the worlds, the protector of all beings. This is the bridge and support for the non-confusion of these worlds.
