कालः स्वभावो नियतिर्यदृच्छा भूतानि योनिः पुरुष इति चिन्त्या | संयोग एषां न त्वात्मभावादात्माप्यनीशः सुखदुःखहेतोः ||१.२||
Is it time, inherent nature, fate, chance, the elements, the womb, or the Person? — these are to be considered. It is not their combination, because the Self is not the lord of pleasure and pain.

स्वदेहमरणिं कृत्वा प्रणवं चोत्तरारणिम् | ध्याननिर्मथनाभ्यासाद्देवं पश्येन्निगूढवत् ||१.१४||
Making one's body the lower fire-stick and Om the upper fire-stick, by the practice of churning through meditation, one sees the God hidden within.

सर्वाजीवे सर्वसंस्थे बृहन्ते तस्मिन्हंसो भ्राम्यते ब्रह्मचक्रे | पृथगात्मानं प्रेरितारं च मत्वा जुष्टस्ततस्तेनामृतत्वमेति ||१.६||
In this wheel of Brahman, in which all life and all existence rests, the swan (individual soul) wanders. Knowing the Self as separate from the impeller, and being graced by it, one attains immortality.

सर्वाजीवे सर्वसंस्थे बृहन्ते तस्मिन्हंसो भ्राम्यते ब्रह्मचक्रे ||१.६||

पृथगात्मानं प्रेरितारं च मत्वा जुष्टस्ततस्तेनामृतत्वमेति ||१.६||
Having known the Self as separate from the impeller, and being graced by it, one attains immortality.

ज्ञाज्ञौ द्वावजावीशनीशौ छायातपौ ब्रह्मपरौ च तौ | एकः सर्वभूतेषु गूढः ||१.९||
Two unborn ones — the knower and the non-knower, the lord and the non-lord, shadow and sunshine — and one hidden in all beings.

एतज्ज्ञेयं नित्यमेवात्मसंस्थं नातः परं वेदितव्यं हि किञ्चित् | भोक्ता भोग्यं प्रेरितारं च मत्वा सर्वं प्रोक्तं त्रिविधं ब्रह्ममेतत् ||१.१२||
This is to be known — eternal, established in the Self. There is nothing beyond this to be known. The enjoyer, the enjoyed, and the impeller — all this is declared as the threefold Brahman.
