अथ कौसल्यश्चाश्वलायनः पप्रच्छ | भगवन् कुत एष प्राणो जायते | कथमायात्यस्मिञ्शरीरे | आत्मानं वा प्रविभज्य कथं प्रतिष्ठते | केनोत्क्रामते | कथं बाह्यमभिधत्ते | कथमध्यात्ममिति ||३.१||
Then Kausalya Ashvalayana asked: 'O Blessed One, from where is this prana born? How does it come into this body? How does it establish itself by dividing itself? By what does it depart? How does it relate to the external? How to the internal?'

आत्मन एष प्राणो जायते | यथैषा पुरुषे छायैतस्मिन्नेतदाततं मनोकृतेनायात्यस्मिञ्शरीरे ||३.३||
Prana is born from the Self. As a shadow is cast by a person, so prana is spread in this body. It comes here by the action of the mind.

यथा राजानमायान्तं महामात्राः पुरस्कृत्य | एवमेवैनं प्राणमायान्तमन्ये प्राणाः पुरस्कृत्य ||३.४||
As ministers go ahead to receive a king who is coming, so the other pranas go ahead to receive the chief prana when it comes.

एष ह्येव साधु कर्म करोति यमेभ्यो लोकेभ्य उन्निनीषति | एष एवासाधु कर्म करोति यमधो निनीषति ||३.७||
This one (prana/Self) does good action for the one it wishes to raise up from these worlds. This one does bad action for the one it wishes to bring down.

स वेदैतत्परमं ब्रह्म धाम | यत्र विश्वं निहितं भाति शुभ्रम् | उपासते पुरुषं ये ह्यकामास्ते शुक्रमेतदतिवर्तन्ति धीराः ||३.२.१||
He knows this supreme abode of Brahman, in which the universe is established and shines pure. The wise who are free from desire go beyond this bright one.
