The Purvarchika (First Part) of the Sama Veda consists of four sections: (1) Agneya — hymns to Agni, (2) Indra — hymns to Indra, (3) Pavamana — hymns to Soma Pavamana, and (4) the Aranyaka section. These hymns are primarily derived from the Rig Veda but are set to specific melodies (saman) for chanting during Soma sacrifices. The Purvarchika contains 585 verses organized into 146 melodic groups. The melodies (saman) in this section are fundamental to Samavedic chanting and form the basis for all Sama Veda recitation.
